- About the Publisher
Her own glass is still full, yet others seem to have run empty fast.
‘My round. I’ll get a bottle,’ she says, keen to go back into the warmth of the pub and see him one more time. It’s not that she wants to talk to him, more that if they’re going to ‘bump into each other’ she’d rather it didn’t happen in front of work friends and Jaden.
The crowd inside is denser now, as people realise how deceptive the sun is. An older version of Lewis, his brother Danny, looks over at her. His face creases with recognition and also confusion as if trying to place her. She smiles a little and he nods back before saying something she can’t hear. Then Lewis, who had been standing with his back to her, turns. He leans forward fractionally before smiling.
It would be best to pretend she hasn’t seen him at all, but he’s already making his way over. For her to get away now would mean she’d have to push through the crowd, to flee, almost run. She’s not going to do any of these things so instead she stands there and watches him get closer and closer. He looks the same, softer maybe, the tight T-shirt and muscled arms gone, but when he smiles, that’s it, her face flushes and she’s that twenty-one-year-old idiot all over again.
‘Yvie,’ he steps forwards and kisses her on the cheek.
She squeezes her eyes shut for the seconds in which his face touches hers. ‘Hi.’
‘What are you doing here? Do you work in the area?’
‘Yes, Wardour Street.’
He nods, ‘Crazy, so does my brother. You remember Danny?’
The brother from the nightclub and the only other person who knew about their relationship all those years ago.
There’s a silence, awkward would be too gentle a way to describe it.
‘How have you been?’ he asks.
‘Good.’
He smiles again, revealing that dimpled cheek and she knows she needs to get away. ‘Anyway, good seeing you again,’ she takes a step away. ‘Enjoy your drink.’
‘That’s it?’ he calls after her.
‘I’m with friends,’ she says, ‘and your brother is—’
‘Entertaining himself,’ he laughs. ‘It’s been ages. Let’s catch up. What are you drinking?’
‘No, I don’t think so. I’m on my way home anyway.’
Two hands grab her shoulders from behind. ‘Where’s the wine?’ Hannah growls.
‘Sorry, the queue is mad.’
‘Damn it, let’s push in,’ Hannah says as she drags Yvonne away from Lewis.
Jaden frowns when he sees her return with Hannah and two bottles of wine each. But she’s done nothing, other than have a brief chat with someone she used to know. Though maybe, it shows on her face, how energised and jittery she feels, how excited and flushed.
