- WANT MORE FROM ME?
“Or …” I don’t want to throw out this option, but we sort of need to. “What if there’s no one behind this, and he’s grabbing the money to keep paying his debts while he’s in hiding but doesn’t want anyone to know he’s still alive, which is why he went with the cash option? I mean, shit, it probably wasn’t even him taking the money out in case he was caught on a camera.”
“Why would he do that?”
I shrug, not sure I want to say the next part, but hey. Confidence. Gotta do it. “You said the other nightclub isn’t happy with you. But not just you. Both of you. I think he’s probably in hiding to save his ass.”
“He would have told me if that was the case.”
“Or he wanted the guys after you both to focus on someone other than him.”
I was right. I shouldn’t have said that. St. Clare looks shocked, but Lars is glaring my way.
“You think his brother is setting him up to be killed?”
“No. I’m saying it’s a possibility, and we need to think of all possibilities instead of focusing on only that nightclub.”
“You’re right.” Lars stands up and paces to the other side of the room. “You really aren’t great with planning, so you should probably stay out of that side of things.”
“That’s like accusing Margot,” St. Clare adds. “It’s ridiculous.”
“Fine.” I’ll let it go. I’ve never met this Colin guy, so it’s not like I can argue the point, and if someone tried to tell me that Margot was pushing me into the line of fire, I’d be fucking pissed.
“He always dealt with the accounts because I’m useless with numbers, but … why wouldn’t he tell me … whatever this is?”
“He’ll tell us once we find him,” Lars says.
“K. Well. Larsy-babe, you’re up. You do your …” I wave my fingers like I’m typing. “Techy things to see what you can find, and then I’ll start looking into this nightclub since we have no other leads.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
“I’ll be taking my car, and you won’t be able to contact me because my phone is off, so if I’m not back by tonight, you can probably go ahead and assume I’m dead.”
“Stop.” Lars pinches that spot between his eyes that I’ve seen him do more times than I can count. “Why is your phone off?”
“I’m worried that it’s being tracked.”
“Well, that’s news to me.”
“If it helps, it’s probably not. No one has shown up here yet, but after yesterday …”
“I know you have a lot of thoughts, constantly, all at once, but these are the ones you have to share.”
“Noted.”
