  47. About the Author

Okay, whew. People just kept throwing stuff at me today that left me breathless. Access? Of course. How else could he get his hands on what it took to destroy an entire city block? And sure, the Melville could make it to the Jersey shore, even as far inland as it was these days. I wasn’t blind. I just hadn’t looked at it real close. Maybe I’d even looked away from it, until Hannah showed up, calling me den rat and crudely warning me off her precious brother. Given what I knew now, she might be doing me a favor.

Jenn dropped her chin to sob into her chest. “And you’ll be the one who gets out ’cause he’ll take you, while the rest of us are stuck here! Forever!”

I eased my wrists from her grip. “I’m not going anywhere. Except to Yankee Stadium, with everyone else. And you’re coming with us. Did you know it’s practically on the Mainland? Now tell me really. What’s up with Rubio?”

She slumped away, like nothing mattered any more. “He’s in the Ward, like I said.”

Now it was me grabbing too hard. I even shook her a little. “You’re telling me true?”

But I’d heard it in her voice, seen it push through the manic light in her eyes.

Her hands flew to her mouth. “Oh, Glim! I’m so sorry! I’m so bad! I’m . . .”

I was out of there, pounding up the stairs.

THIRTY-THREE

The fourth floor was chaos like the rest of the den, but its medicinal smells made the rush feel more desperate. I near-collided with Poppy as she crutched along the busy upper hallway, her shot leg wrapped and splinted. I was dancing with urgency but owed her at least a moment. “What, you’re up already?”

“Had to be.” Her face was strained, her body tight with effort, but she tried for a grin. “Taped and stapled, and got a boat to catch. Mobile sick and injured are going up first so the medics can get a dispensary set up there. Spunk’s at the dock already.”

“He’s mobile?”

“More or less. You know how he is. Don’t worry. I’ll keep an eye on him.”

I thought she was looking rather fond. Poppy and Spunk? Now there was a combo. “You got enough painkillers?”

“Some. Short supply.”

Like everything else was about to be. “Listen, I’d help you downstairs, but Rube’s up here somewhere. I gotta check on him.”

Poppy’s grin faded. “Yeah, I heard. I’ll be fine. You go find him.” Gathering herself, she joined a group cutting a slow path through the confusion with their walkers and canes.
