“You did a great job on these,” she called down the street to Danny, who was filming Kylie analyzing the first clue.

Danny flashed her a smile and thumbs-up, apparently not wanting to yell back while he was recording. Becca carefully crossed the street in order to add her last flyer to the bulletin board outside the dog park, then rejoined the group, who were returning to where Kylie and Danny were. Matt rode around on his scooter, Ralphie in the safety of the harness on his back once again.

“Maybe we can see the sequence in a different way,” Miguel said, pulling out a piece of sidewalk chalk from the side pocket of his cargo pants. He took a glance over Kylie’s shoulder before hurrying to copy the sequence on the sidewalk, running back every few seconds to memorize the next section of numbers.

“What was the second letter, the one starting the second half of the number chain?” he eventually called back to Kylie, apparently too tired to run back and forth anymore. “Was it a V?”

“W,” Kylie called back. “As in . . .” She paused, and her eyes grew wide. “Holy cow, I think I figured it out.”

“What?” Miguel answered, not quite understanding. “As in . . . ?”

“West,” Kylie said, standing up with her head held high. “This isn’t an address per se, but these numbers could very well lead us to an address.”

“How?” Becca asked, impressed and excited. She knew Kylie could figure it out!

“Have any of you ever heard of DMS?” Kylie walked over to Miguel, took the sidewalk chalk from his hand, and bent down to finish writing out the sequence.

“Erm, no,” Frankie admitted, watching Kylie stand and wipe the chalk from her hands on the front of her jeans.

“Me either,” Matt said, slowing his scooter to a stop nearby.

Danny didn’t answer, too focused on getting everybody else’s answers on camera.

“DMS,” Becca repeated. “Wait, wait, I think we learned about that during our geography unit.”

“Yes we did,” Kylie said, nodding excitedly. “Do you remember what it stands for?”

Becca tried to remember what Miss Pritchet had said in class that day, but she could only remember how she’d been secretly drawing a gymnastics comic in the margins of her notebook. “Something about seconds,” she said slowly. “Minutes and seconds?”

“Degrees, minutes, seconds,” Kylie confirmed, looking over the sequence on the sidewalk once again. “The clue is a geographic coordinate expression. The N in this stands for North. The W stands for West. And the numbers describe the latitude and longitude of . . . somewhere.”

“Somewhere?” Miguel repeated. “As in, where we can find Nacho and Elephant?”
