“Maybe,” Kylie said, pulling out her cell phone. “At the very least, it should lead to the next clue.” She motioned for Becca to come join her in looking at the screen, and Becca stepped eagerly forward. “I’m going to plug these coordinates into Google Maps and see if anything pops up.”
“You’re a genius,” Becca breathed. Her heart was racing with excitement. They were able to get this clue figured out way faster than they got their first clue at the school. Already they were working as more of a team from the get-go.
“Well?” Danny asked from behind the lens, stepping dramatically forward to get a close-up of Becca and Kylie. “What does it say?”
Kylie finished entering the coordinates and pushed the go button. Almost instantly, a map popped up, complete with a blue teardrop pin that marked their new destination. 3322 Gurley Street, the address on the sidebar read.
“The Gurley Street house?” Becca and Kylie both yelled at the same time, and Becca’s heart went from racing because she was excited to racing because she was nervous.
“Wait. What?” Frankie echoed, their voice cracking in disbelief. “Did you just say that the address belongs to the Gurley Street house?”
“Well,” Matt said with an empty chuckle. “This just got a whole lot more interesting, didn’t it?”
“For the documentary’s sake,” Danny cut in, moving the camera back and forth between them all in a confused sort of manner. “Remind the audience where exactly Gurley Street is and why everybody’s acting this way about it?”
Becca suddenly remembered that Danny’s family had only moved to town a few years ago, and it was likely he’d never heard of the Gurley Street house until now. “It’s not that far from here, actually,” she said, nodding toward the section of streets behind them. “It’s in the next neighborhood over from ours.”
“Oh, so it’s close!” Danny said, breaking out into a smile. “That’s great news, right? We can go there right now!”
“No way!” Frankie cried out, raising their hands in fear. “The Gurley Street house is haunted—for real.”
“A haunted house?” Danny answered in disbelief. “All this time there’s been a real haunted house just a hop, skip, and jump away, and none of you have ever mentioned it until now?”
“Because it’s creepy.” Becca tried to think of the best way to explain the pit of dread that formed in her stomach at the mere mention of the house on Gurley Street. “Growing up, everybody knew about the house. You just didn’t play over there. The street is on the back edge of the neighborhood, where the forest begins, and there’s only one house on it. It’s tucked pretty far back into the trees. It’s dark and creepy back there.”
“Definitely creepy,” Miguel said with a nod. “Definitely haunted.”
