Eden put away two more mimosas as everyone danced to Beyonce and Alison Wonderland. Her head was soon full of a familiar fuzziness, and she joined Andy on the dance floor for ‘Take Your Mama Out.’ They docked in Port Melbourne and a line of pink stretch limousines was waiting to take guests from the yacht to the warehouse party. Eden shared a limo with Andy, Chase, and Beth. She felt guilty drinking the Dom Perignon chilling in the car, but Beth didn’t bat an eyelid.
No one cares, she told herself, but the alcohol was making her feel uneasy. She couldn’t wait to see Willow. As soon as she wrapped her arms around him and smelled his sweet summer scent, she’d feel better.
“How are you going to get by without him?”
Eden turned to Andy. “Huh?”
He gave her a confused look and pointed at her hand. “Your phone’s going off.”
“Oh. Thanks.”
She found a DM from Francis.
See you soon, gorgeous. Save a drink for me.
Eden frowned. She and Francis had been on good, if polite, terms since the Instagram photo drama, but they hadn’t spoken one-on-one. So why was he acting like they were meeting up? Did he think she was doing her usual slot at Pineapple Bang Bang?
“Bad news?” Andy asked.
“No, Francis messaged.”
“About the tour?”
“He wants to have a drink.”
Andy rolled his eyes. “That’d be right. His management still won’t get back to me, but he wants to flirt with you.”
“That’s Francis. You think we won’t make his tour?”
Andy sighed. “Hard to say, I’m pushing as hard as I can without pushing, but from the sound of things, competition’s stiff. His management’s dangling the slot for a tonne of DJs right now. Weighing up who’s got the most clout.”
Eden’s stomach knotted. Thanks to Willow she had thirty thousand Instagram followers and her monthly Spotify listens were nearing a hundred thousand, but that was nothing compared to Francis.
Andy squeezed her arm. “Whatever happens, you can do slots with Justin Casey and Two Shue. You’re still going on tour.”
“Sure,” Eden said. It was a bad habit she’d picked up from Willow. The perfect non-response to everything.
“Enough work chat.” Andy held up his almost-empty champagne glass. “Refill?”
It took an hour to get to the warehouse. Eden didn’t know what she’d been expecting but she could hardly believe her eyes. Music was blasting from what looked like an airplane hangar and all around it was a county fair, amusement rides, game stalls, and vendors handing out free popcorn, hot dogs, fairy floss, and frozen cocktails.
“Let’s ride the bumper cars,” Beth called as red and gold fireworks exploded overhead.
