Eden chewed the inside of her cheeks. The only thing she’d ever wanted to do was play music and she was already doing that. “What was your thing?”
“Voice acting,” Beth said at once. “I did some while I was drinking, but it was always half-assed. Now I’ve had a few gigs alongside my podcast, and I love it.”
“Right…” Eden still couldn’t think of anything except music. And maybe finally watching the Godfather movies. But that didn’t seem important enough.
Beth flipped a hand. “Don’t stress. There’s something. You’ll find it when the dust settles, I promise, and whatever it is, it’ll help you take care of yourself.”
The bartender handed over their lobster rolls, giving Eden an excuse not to answer. Take care of yourself. What the fuck did that even mean?
Beth touched her arm. “Should we head back to the gang?”
“You go. I have to call someone.”
“See you soon.”
Beth ducked away, leaving Eden to stare at the ocean as she ate her roll. Take care of herself. She probed her mind, willing to poke even the ugliest, most painful memories. What did really she want to do with her time? An idea came. A sweet face, the feeling of being incredibly intertwined… Eden dropped her roll. It landed between her toes, spraying her shoes with mayonnaise.
“Fuck that,” she whispered. “Fuck all of that.”
She threw the roll in the trash and turned to the waiter rearranging tubs of lemon wedges behind the bar. “Hi, could I please get a margarita?”
When Eden finished her drink and returned to the group, everyone was on their feet dancing to ‘Alejandro’ by Lady Gaga.
“Get ready,” Mara called as Chase twirled her in a circle. “The cars are on their way!”
Eden took a mimosa from a passing tray, relieved she’d soon be seeing Willow. When she first heard the bachelor and bachelorette party were converging in the same warehouse, she’d been confused.
“Doesn’t this chick want your mate to have strippers?” she’d asked Willow.
He’d snorted. “Are you kidding? It’s Derek who wanted to join the parties. He’d lose his shit if Mara was at some club without him.”
“Possessive.”
“Stupidly. But he’s loved Mara his whole life and they’re just about to get married, so he’s even more uptight. Plus…” Willow pulled her into his arms. “A joint party means I get to see my pretty girl. So, as far as I’m concerned, it’s the best idea in the world.”
