He was Australian, though there was a plumminess in his voice that spoke of English parents. Or being from Adelaide.

“Good, thanks.” Willow slid a hand across Eden’s shoulder. Her skin was cool, and she didn’t react to his touch.

“I’m David Walker,” the guy said, holding out a hand. “Nice to meet you.”

Willow was sure David was going to try to crush his hand and sure enough, he went way too hard on the shake. Willow kept his smile placid and squeezed. A line appeared between David’s eyebrows.

That’s right, fuckhead. Welcome to the party.

He smiled at Eden’s sister. She was even prettier up close, with porcelain doll skin and round green eyes. His own blurred as he looked at her, as though they couldn’t focus on something so symmetrical. “Hi, I’m Willow. Eden’s boyfrie—”

“Boyfriend?” David interrupted. “Boyfriend?”

Willow kept his eyes on Sienna. “Nice to meet you.”

They shook hands. Sienna’s fingers were as limp as old celery and her eyes stayed fixed on some spot over his shoulder. Willow resisted the urge to turn and see what she was looking at. Her unblinking gaze reminded him of a fish.

Beside him, Eden’s face was as blank as her sister’s. What was going on? Was there a gas leak somewhere?

David looked him up and down. “So, you’re Edie’s boyfriend?”

Dislike surged through Willow. Why the fuck did he care? “Yup. Congrats on the engagement, by the way.”

“Thanks.” David leered at his fiancé. “I don’t mean to sound disbelieving but Sienna and I wondered whether Edie was ever going to get serious about someone.”

Sienna smiled at something over Willow’s shoulder. Had someone slipped her Ketamine? Did she have any more?

David chuckled like a game show host after a bad pun. “You see, Edie’s last relationship is a bit of a family legend.”

Eden stiffened. “Don’t.”

“Oh, come on, you were the one who told everyone it didn’t matter, remember? You wanted to bring both of them to Christmas.”

Sienna gave a tinkling laugh. A doll that had its string pulled.

“Shut up,” Eden whispered. “David, just shut—”

“Back in high school, Edie went out with two boys at the same time,” David said, gesturing around as though he was giving a lecture. “Things got serious, from memory.”

“We were friends,” Eden muttered. “It wasn’t a big deal.”

David’s toothy smile grew wider. “A throuple I think it’s called now. You were ahead of your time, Edie.”

Sienna laughed again and Willow felt Eden’s shoulders slump. His mouth was open before his brain could put on its shoes. “That’s no big deal. When I was twenty-two, I used to hook up with this married couple. Just the wife, I mean. The husband watched. It was fine. No harm, no foul.”
