“That the drinks were poisoned?” I clarified. “I remembered that Javier had fled the country after poisoning his lover and that Piper had met him at a fashion show before that. It seemed only logical that Piper decided to use the same method to get rid of Dooney. Both men had been drinking expensive whiskey right before they died, so I suspected she poisoned the bottle and used it on both of them. In fact, I’ll bet Quentin’s glass will still have trace amounts of the poison. If you kept everything from the crime scene, that would put a lock on it.”
I turned to Piper. “You told me the day I met you that you chose Javier as your milliner because you’d recently met him at India Couture Week. If I remember right, India is one of the few places you can still purchase cyanide.”
“If you bribe the right people. Isn’t that so, Piper?” Viv asked.
“You’re being ridiculous,” Piper protested. “So what if I was in India at the same time as Javier? You can’t prove anything.”
“No, but he can,” Viv said. She nodded at Detective Stewart and his chest swelled.
“After you left the room with Rita, Piper described the . . . er . . . outfit Rita was wearing in the photographs,” I began. “But she had just said she knew nothing about the photographs. I guessed that she was the one who gave the photos to Dooney to blackmail Rita. Dooney, of course, told Quentin all about Piper’s scheme. Then Quentin tried to blackmail Piper after Dooney died. Unless she agreed to marry him, he would tell her parents that she was the one who thought up the blackmail scheme to get more money out of them for her wedding. Knowing this would cause her parents to cut her off from the family money, she decided to kill him and set up her mother as the murderer instead.”
“Lies, lies, lies,” Piper said. “It’s all lies. You’re going to look bloody stupid if you listen to this twaddle and arrest me. My mother is the killer and Scarlett tried to kill me because her fiancé is still in love with me.”
Harry cringed and shook his head. “No. Absolutely unequivocally no.”
“Yeah, I didn’t think so either,” Detective Stewart said. “Come along, Ms. May. Let’s go see what your parents have to say about all of this.”
We watched them walk away and Viv stepped up and hugged me. “I’m so glad you’re all right.”
“Me, too,” I said. “Your timing was brilliant.”
“Good thing I walked Dominick out and ran into Harrison,” she said.
“Very good thing,” Harry agreed.
The three of us began to walk back to the castle. I noticed none of us wanted to use the tunnel. Even with the light on, if I never went in there again, it was just fine with me.
