Piper opened her mouth to argue, and it was the moment Viv needed. She launched herself out of the tunnel and grabbed Piper about the knees, taking her down with a solid thump. Piper dropped the knife and started to wheeze.
With the wind knocked out of her, Piper was helpless. It gave the detective and constable the opportunity to put her in restraints. The detective picked up the knife by the blade and dropped it into his pocket. Then he and the constable dragged Piper to her feet.
She struggled against their hold, while Harry and I hurried to help Viv up.
“Are you all right?” I asked. I took one arm while Harry took the other.
“Right as rain,” Viv said. We lifted her to a standing position. “And you?”
“I’m fine,” I said. “Thankfully the tunnel was an escape route. I almost lost it when the door was stuck but Harry opened it just in time.”
“Yeah, someone moved a large boulder in front of it,” Harry said. He frowned at the detective.
“We were trying to keep people from accessing the castle through it.” He gestured to a very large rock at the side of the door. “Hardly a boulder.”
“I ran into Harrison when I was walking Dominick out. Harrison was waiting for the ambulance and told me where you were,” said Viv. “I had three heart attacks when I arrived at the library and the door was locked and no one was answering. Luckily, it was an easy lock to open.”
“A family talent?” Harry asked me. I shrugged.
“When I got the door open and you weren’t in there, I knew something was wrong. Then I saw that the door in the back of the room was open to that creepy passageway,” Viv said. She turned to Stewart. “I heard everything that was said in the tunnel. Piper murdered both Dooney and Quentin. She poisoned their drinks.”
Detective Stewart’s eyebrows went up. “Are you certain? The medical examiner speculated poison killed them but said the toxicology report wouldn’t be in for a few more days.”
“Tell him to look for cyanide,” I said. “Piper’s former hat designer, Javier Sebastian, was accused of murdering his lover with cyanide and I believe he’s the one who gave the poison to Piper.”
“Piper was going to kill Scarlett to keep her quiet,” Viv concluded.
Harry slid his arm around my waist and pulled me close. “I step away for one minute and you solve the murders and almost get yourself killed,” he muttered.
I patted his chest, trying to comfort him.
“How did you figure it out?” Detective Stewart asked me.
