“It’s late. I should get home. Check in on Mo and the kids,” Ethic stated. It took all of 10 minutes for Alani to bring out Dolce’s food and Ethic didn’t miss her attitude. He paid the bill, leaving a generous tip on the table, and then walked out, guiding Dolce by the small of her back. Alani had never been so jealous of a back in her life. As soon as she saw Ethic’s Range pull out of the parking lot, she hurriedly cleaned off his table, so she could clock out. Suddenly, a glass of red wine was calling her name.
Alani had one more table come in last minute, and by the time they left, she was drained. She threw her books in her tote and waved goodbye to the cooks, as she walked out into the cool, night air. She stopped, mid step, when she saw Ethic standing in front of his car, leaning against the hood. He was alone, and she found a bit of relief in that fact - even though he owed her no explanations.
“Come here.”
It came out like a command... Like a king who was perched on a throne, giving orders to a peasant. He didn’t mean to be bossy, but he was a boss. She could see it in the way he carried himself and the way others carried him. Alani was a stubborn girl, however, and nobody told her when to move or how to move. He had just flashed his little, fancy girlfriend in her face and yes, the ‘little’ description was necessary because Alani was being petty - something she was good at.
“It’s late, I’m going home,” she said.
She turned toward her car and unlocked the doors, before climbing inside. When she turned over the ignition, it didn’t start.
