I cringed, recalling the panicked moment when Ryan and I were caught. Matilda had spewed a long string of German at us that I could only assume was laced with disgust and a bit of swearing. It was the first time I’d heard her slip into her native tongue. All those years with our family and the woman had worked hard on her English, refusing to speak German and insisting she learn our language to perfection. And she had, until I gave her the shock of her career. And of course, I couldn’t respond fast enough to deny everything she saw because I had a mouthful of Ryan’s dick.

Asher turned on some music, keeping the volume low enough we could talk over it, and dropped onto the chair at his desk, swiveling around to face me. I plunked down on his bed, rolling to my stomach, assessing the situation.

“So, talk to me. What’s up with the new job opportunity? Why’s it complicated? And does it involve selling your ass? Because if so, don’t do it.”

“Are you dating that girl in your finance class?”

Asher flinched. “No, why? What girl? Fuck, tell me you aren’t setting me up with someone. You said this was about a job. Why are you asking me about girls?”

Because it had dawned on me late the previous night when I wasn’t sleeping that it would be harder to convince him of anything if he was dating, not that Asher dated much. He went through girls faster than a hobo went through cheap liquor. I couldn’t keep up and had stopped asking him about his girlfriends/fuck-friends years ago.

“It’s complicated. So you aren’t dating anyone?”

“No. What the hell is this about?”

“Okay. I need you to keep an open mind and not get mad.”

“You telling me not to get mad is already jacking up my blood pressure. What?”

I pursed my lips and studied my brother. His face was as familiar as my own. Same sharp nose, same square jaw, thick brows, prominent chin, and ears that stuck out a little too far. We had the identical shade of hair—Asher styled his differently, but it was even the same length. I had a freckle on the far side of my jaw that he didn’t have. He smiled with dimples, and I didn’t. Lastly, he’d bulked up over the years by going to the gym, whereas I was slimmer and lankier.
