Once again I find myself deeply indebted to my agent, Phyllis Westberg, and my editor, Keith Clayton, for their persistence, diligence, and general midwifery along this lengthy road. It’s not hyperbole: I couldn’t have done it without them.
I owe a long overdue salute to my parents, Paul Schreiber and Kathy Peer-bolte, for always believing in me and encouraging me for as long as I can remember.
Mad props to Martin “Mr. Wiggles” Sweeney for providing the fully loaded iPod during the last revision process, when I needed it most.
Thank you again, Christina and kids, for giving me the time and space to keep writing.
Finally, I am grateful to the staff and all my coworkers at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, in particular George Stoltz, for a memorable tour through the underground tunnels and lesser-known passageways of that facility.
The hospital within these pages is a work of fiction.
