  86. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“Hey, Taylor, so great to see you here. I love that this professor lets anyone sit in on the class. So open-minded. I bet you brought my money. You’re prepared like that, right?” She sat in the seat two rows away.

“I don’t owe you money. The damage you claim I did is either made up or manufactured.” I started setting up my notes, writing the date and the chapter for our lecture.

“I had a feeling you would say that. Which is another problem I had with you—you were predictable.”

Roberta had lost her freaking grip on reality. Or maybe she never had it there to start with.

I chose silence accompanied by a deep breath as a response. I knew people could be like this—unreasonable and liars—but it was upsetting to have this girl I was forced to live with be such a devout practitioner of the style.

“You can act all high and mighty, but you know and I know that you destroyed my bed frame, my contact lenses, and a number of outfits. Expensive ones.”

I knew she had a habit of leaving her contacts out and never closing the lids on things. Both these tendencies most likely led to her contacts lack of moisture. But blaming me was way easier than changing behavior.

I looked past Roberta and focused on the professor who was setting up his display.

Roberta shoved her phone’s screen in my face before angrily swiping through her photos.

“This is you. This is you.” The pictures were blurry and too close for me to make out. I was pretty sure that some of them were her bathing suit parts. Or her boyfriends. “More you. Do you need more proof? I’ll get you more proof.”

The professor started the lecture and Roberta eventually found a seat a few aisles away toward the front. I pretended to be focusing, but my mind was reeling with her bizarre accusations. I was out of her precious single dorm room, so she needed to move on. Anytime I glanced in her direction, she seemed to know and shoot me a horrible look. I realized she had her phone propped so that she could see me from her camera. She was either using the camera feature to see me or straight-up just recording me the entire time.

As the class ended and I put my stuff away, Roberta was back in my face. I did my best to not look at her.

“So you’re dating a famous influencer, huh? I found that out. He gets paid advertisements and everything. So tell him about your bills. Suck that dick so hard money comes out.” She tapped her index finger hard on the back of my chair.
