The rituals of installing the idol are completed in haste for Sindhutai’s sake. The gathering is overwhelmed with emotion to see Lord Ram, their Ram, standing erect in the sanctum sanctorum. They chant his name joyously, over and over, transported that he has found this new home in their midst. Dr Bhaskar raises his hand to silence the gathering and invites Swami Satyanand to say a few words. He has not risen from his seat because he is supporting Sindhutai’s head on his shoulder. Swami Satyanand rises. ‘This is not the occasion for long speeches. You can see how ill our patron, Sindhutai Joshi, is. It has been her dearest wish to see Shri Ram installed in her front yard. It is a great day for us that we have been able to fulfil her wish. We have no doubt whatsoever that her health will mend rapidly now. I wish to express my gratitude to her for two things today. First, for the deep faith she has shown in our work. And second, for having willed this gracious home to us so we may continue our work in this district. Today, with you the eminent citizens of this town as witnesses, I solemnly promise Sindhutai and her son, who is present amongst us, to turn this temple into one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Hindustan.’
Ashesh and Anima cannot hear what he says after this. A thousand insects seem to be fluttering in Anima’s ears and Ashesh’s eyes have turned to cold marbles. Janaki glances anxiously at them in turn. They glare at Dr Bhaskar who is watching over Sindhutai with tender care. A few moments later he whispers in her ear. She brings her trembling hands together in a namaskar. The audience breaks into thunderous applause. Sindhutai’s head lolls back. Dr Bhaskar rises in a hurry. ‘My sister is exhausted with all the excitement. With your leave I will carry her upstairs.’
Tutaris and conch shells are blown outside the gate. Bright orange jhendu flowers are thrown in the air. Photographers run forward. Buttons click, cameras flash. Dr Bhaskar raises Sindhutai’s right hand. Then once again, he puts one arm under her knee, one under her neck and lifts her up bodily. Somebody whispers in Anima’s ear, ‘It’s over. Come home.’
