  87. About the Author

Here’s what they don’t tell you. The fight is sometimes over before it starts. Your adrenaline didn’t get anywhere near climax, it’s only taking off, wheels lifting off the tarmac, but the fight is over. Maybe because he is bigger and stronger, so much stronger than you.

He came at me fast and smashed his hand over my mouth. The inside of my lips banged against my teeth, and I tasted blood. His other hand twisted my arm behind my back. He moved fluidly and rotated me, his hand still on my mouth, and he was behind me, his groin jammed against the small of my back. “No screaming. People are going to church this morning.” His voice rough, not even out of breath. I was pulling, pushing, flailing against his grip.

One punch to my right kidney, and the pain was so blinding, sharp as sunshine, I couldn’t breathe. I fell forward onto the counter, my cheek hitting hard.

He pulled my arms tight behind my back and she was binding them with what felt like duct tape. He jammed a sock in my mouth, fastened it with duct tape, and she wrapped my ankles. Pain gripping my lower back, still so bad, my breath hadn’t come back to me.

“I’m gonna make you eat one,” he whispered, his breath hot and close to my face.

Why was he so mad at me? He’d never met me.

“Hell no, you’re not gonna make her eat one,” Desiree said. “I got to clean up that bug snot on the floor, I don’t want to clean up her puke too. Besides, we don’t have time for your games. Sun’s up. Took you so fucking long, Heather. Jesus Christ. I fell asleep on your couch.”

I glanced down at the shards. Trevor would know something happened.

Desiree must have followed my gaze because she said, “Don’t worry, baby. I’ll clean that up too. Trevor won’t notice a thing.”

Sock in my mouth, I couldn’t respond, but I gave her an eyes-wide, angry look. Bitch. Back-stabbing bitch.

She held my gaze, her eyebrows softened. She said softly, as a statement, not a question, “You want to know why.”

Fuck, yes, I wanted to know why.

“Enough,” Pierce said. “Let’s get her into the trunk.”

On my side, ankles bound, wrists bound behind my back, I tried to calm my breathing so I wouldn’t die vomiting and inhaling his sweaty sock. It kept triggering my gag reflex. I kicked at the sides and back of the trunk, but found no give anywhere. Didn’t they say you could kick out the tail lights? This hollow advice was failing me, and I was bitter and doubtful of all those “What to do if” videos.
