Usually she preferred not to take advantage of the effect she had on men, and would maintain a cold attitude to discourage them from focusing their attention on her, giving her priority or being over-friendly. But this time she needed the help, as the software that came with the camera was unpleasantly complicated, and she doubted that she would have found her way through it unassisted.

The camera recorded through a tiny lens. The field of view was similar to that of a door peephole, distorted, but the images were in high resolution. The software allowed her to zoom in to examine a small area of the image, so if she did manage to hide the camera somewhere in Hákon’s room, she would be able to enlarge the part of the recording that showed his hands and the keyboard, and she could slow down the replay. That would give 129her the passwords to the Swiss bank account, and then she would really be making progress in the right direction.

She walked outside into the cold wind that was blowing along Suðurlandsbraut. Her skin tingled almost painfully, and she felt the hairs on her neck rising in her shaggy forebears’ instinctive response to the cold. She could well understand why cats seemed to double in size in the cold, becoming balls of fur. Right now she would happily have snuggled into a warm fur coat as she ran from the computer shop over to her hire car. She couldn’t understand how people managed to live here in the winter, if this was what the summers were like.

She turned the heater up full blast as she sat in the car and kneaded the chill out of her hands. The dashboard showed it was ten degrees outside. But the chill could have had something to do with her emotional state. It could have been her nerves making her shiver, as both the encounter with Daníel, the heat of his body on the motorcycle still vivid in her thoughts and setting her belly fluttering, and the pain of listening to her mother’s tears that morning had thrown her off balance. Now she could only fear that her mother was right, and that something bad had happened to Ísafold – something genuinely bad.
