The chair creaked as she sat down, and she froze, sitting completely still and listening for any sign that Hákon had been disturbed by the sound. There was silence for a moment, and then he drew a deep breath and exhaled. This was a long breath, in through his nose, and smartly exhaled through the mouth. It wasn’t exactly a snore, but there was a faint rumble deep in his nose with every breath he took. Áróra counted three breaths before she plugged the flash drive into his laptop, and then opened it so that the screen lit up. It instantly demanded a password. Hell. She felt a combination of disappointment and relief. She couldn’t do much without a password. So she could use this as an excuse. It couldn’t be done, was completely impossible; and that meant she could turn her back on Hákon and his affairs, and concentrate on Ísafold. After all, that was what had brought her to Iceland.
A discreet ping from the computer stopped her just as she was about to extract the flash drive; a dialogue box asking for an email address. So her spy software worked even though the computer was locked behind a password. This investment continued to take 109her by surprise. She had often used it to access computers, but never for a computer that was locked.
Hákon muttered and shifted in the bed. His face was now turned towards her as she sat in front of his computer, and she held her breath as she waited. There was dead silence in the room, and Áróra could feel her own heartbeat becoming faster as she waited for a signal that Hákon was still sleeping. What would she say if she turned and found him lying there, watching her messing around with his computer? How would she explain that?
She turned her head slowly, taking care not to move her hips, so that the chair would not creak again, and looked over her shoulder. Hákon lay with his eyes closed, and she felt a rush of relief as he took a deep breath and exhaled with a loud snore. Áróra wrote CU later on the pad that lay next to the computer and drew a heart under it. She was relieved not to have to look him in the face, not only because she was deceiving him by planting spy software on his computer, but also because thoughts of Ísafold filled her mind, and waking up next to a guy she hardly knew seemed to be so wrong in every way.
She typed her email address in the dialogue box and clicked the start button before taking the flash drive from the computer.
