JOSEF: Fjurioji su me krobeli vu Buenos Airesu. Ti kači su me lošisilovli djejnima, vendjeljama, ne sačam se.[20]
LAMB: What’s he saying?
Elena opens her mouth to speak –
HAMILTON: That he was kidnapped and tortured –
Lamb and Elena turn to Hamilton.
LAMB: You and I are going to have a long chat about your definition of ‘truth.’
Hamilton puts up his hands, apologetic.
HAMILTON: I was scared for him, okay? The Fjurioji? They’re a death squad that tracks down Sužni leaders.
LAMB: So they’re the ones who dropped him off here?
HAMILTON: That’s what doesn’t make sense. When the Fjurioji catch you, they kill you. They aren’t interested in justice. They want revenge. (indicates Josef) He shouldn’t be alive. They’ve never let anyone go. Or handed anyone over to be tried.
(to Josef) What did they ask you? Ted su voni[21] – (to Elena) What’s the word for ‘interrogate’?
ELENA: Vispitevati.[22]
HAMILTON: (to Josef) Ted su te voni vispitevali, što su te voni dečeli tebi?[23]
JOSEF: Vaj?[24]
ELENA: Šta su vas jaskali?[25]
*HAMILTON: I’m rusty.
*JOSEF: Oh! Ne znonam zar, ali jaskali su o nošim kodstanu, Juriju. Mož su cˇili, da ga mestu –[26]
ELENA: (to Lamb) Hold on. He just said, ‘They were asking about our neighbour, Yuri.’
HAMILTON: Yes, but he’s not finished –
LAMB: (to Elena) That’s an exact translation?
ELENA: Word for word.
LAMB: Mr. Barnes, one more lie from you and I will arrest you for obstruction.
HAMILTON: Okay, wait – I’m confused …
LAMB: Our neighbour. Not my neighbour. Our. Meaning you both lived in the same house.
HAMILTON: I’m sure it was just a –
LAMB: Nah-uh. The whole cousin thing wasn’t really jiving for me anyways. He’s what, your father? Your uncle?
Hamilton looks at Josef.
HAMILTON: Father.
Lamb and Elena exchange a glance.
ELENA: I thought his two children died in a car accident before the war.
HAMILTON: My mother and sister did. They bought a corpse at the morgue and passed it off as my own. I was shipped off to England. (looks at Josef) I was told he was dead. This is the first time I’ve seen him in twenty-five years.
LAMB: Merry Christmas. (awkward) Or whatever. (takes Hamilton’s business card) I guess someone figured it was time for a family reunion.
HAMILTON: (to himself) Of course.
LAMB: What?
HAMILTON: Yuri. They were asking him about Yuri. He was my ‘fixer,’ and the only person who knows … (to Josef) Jasi li nim racˇao po Yuriju?[27]
JOSEF: (nods) Ašto?[28]
HAMILTON: Von je jadini koj znoma moe nime![29]
Josef takes in this information, then suddenly takes a sharp intake of breath.
JOSEF: (points to Hamilton) Ti! Baže te![30]
Hamilton rushes over to Lamb.
Elena takes her phone from its belt clip, dials a number and returns the phone to her belt clip.
