LAMB: I don’t like this sudden change in attitude.

HAMILTON: It may be a mental health issue …

LAMB: I don’t get the sense he’s cray-cray. (off Hamilton’s look) My daughter says that.

ELENA: If we believe what his uniform says –

HAMILTON: You’re assuming it’s his.

LAMB: It fits him perfectly.

ELENA: You understand that every high-ranking Sužni officer is wanted by Interpol? If he’s one –

LAMB: Now hold on, just because he’s wearing a uniform –

ELENA: There’s a tattoo, as well.

*HAMILTON: Excuse me?

*LAMB: Say again?

ELENA: All Sužni officers have a tattoo above their heart. (puts her hand above her heart) Cerberus holding a knife.

Lamb looks at Hamilton. Hamilton cocks his head, as if to say, ‘Seriously?’

LAMB: (to Hamilton) Look, if it’s not there …

ELENA: If it’s not there, I won’t say another word about it.

LAMB: Can you ask him to unbutton his jacket?

HAMILTON: The legality of all this is … questionable.

(off Lamb’s look) I’m just saying. Once a lawyer, always a lawyer.

Lamb nods to Elena.

ELENA: Raskomajte plaknu.[14]

LAMB: Please.

ELENA: Nalim vas.[15]

Josef looks at Elena, then Lamb, and finally Hamilton. He begins to unbutton his jacket.

LAMB: What’s a cerberus?

ELENA: It’s a three-headed dog.

LAMB: Right. Let me guess. Latin?

ELENA: Greek, I think.

LAMB: Whatever happened to plain old English?

Josef opens his jacket. Above his heart is a large tattoo of a cerberus holding a knife in its right paw.

ELENA: It’s tattooed over the heart so they never lose courage in battle.

LAMB: I’m wishing I’d stayed home for this shift.

HAMILTON: Now hold on. (to Elena) You’re saying this old man is … what, exactly?

ELENA: The uniform, the tattoo, the attitude …

HAMILTON: Yes?

ELENA: (to Lamb) All I know is that high-ranking Sužni officers are wanted for war crimes.

LAMB: Yeah, but he’s an old man.

ELENA: The war was twenty-two years ago.

LAMB: Oh. (looks at Josef) Christ.

ELENA: I don’t know, can’t you look it up on the Interpol database or whatever?

HAMILTON: I thought you were an expert.

LAMB: I don’t have access here, I’d have to – (waves toward the door) Look, I got two kids waiting for me at home, so please, don’t make me go on a wild goose chase …

ELENA: I don’t know exactly who he is, okay? But there’s only a handful of people he could be … Gnivomir Ilić, the Black Wolf ? Juraj Plamen? Kazimir Mstijov, the Red / Knight? Josef Džibrilovo, the Butcher?

HAMILTON: (to Lamb) This is getting us nowhere.

LAMB: Wait, what was that last one?

ELENA: Josef Džibrilovo?

LAMB: His nickname?

ELENA: The Butcher.

Lamb looks at Hamilton.

ELENA: What?

Lamb goes to his desk and takes out the butcher’s hook.

LAMB: It was around his neck.
