ELENA: A Sužni general, Inspector. That’s like someone walking in here dressed in a Nazi uniform –
HAMILTON: A Nazi uniform?
LAMB: Okay, whoa whoa whoa. Why do I feel like the odd man out here? (to Hamilton) You know what she’s talking about?
HAMILTON: I just think comparing a civil war to the Third Reich / is a bit much.
ELENA: (to Hamilton) Jaste li Lavinijanac?[2]
HAMILTON: I’m sorry?
ELENA: You’re not from Lavinia?
HAMILTON: No.
ELENA: Not a lot of people know our country even exists, let alone our history.
LAMB: Yeah, but this guy’s like Google in real life.
ELENA: And there’s nothing civil about genocide.
HAMILTON: Look, I … I wasn’t trying to – I’m not an expert, by any means. I read The Economist. And I have a colleague who’s from there who explained it to me once, and he called it a civil war.
ELENA: I bet he did.
LAMB: But y’all speak the same language, right?
ELENA: As hard as it may be to believe, yes.
LAMB: So the uniform is from the war?
Elena nods.
LAMB: (flips through his notes) Okay. What does this mean? ‘Ne-chu-vi-nicho-rachi’?
ELENA: Sounds like, ‘I won’t tell you anything.’
LAMB: Guess that bears out the torture theory. Ask him for his name.
ELENA: Kato se zavite?[3] (beat) Voše nime?[4] (beat) Not the talkative type, I guess.
LAMB: Gosh, I’m glad we waited for a translator.
Ask him if he knows the two kids who brought him in.
ELENA: Ko su bili ljumi koi su vas davili vodje?[5]
JOSEF: Njima vaza.[6]
ELENA: He says he doesn’t know.
LAMB: Tell him we want to help him, but we need to know who he is first.
ELENA: Čilemo vam pomači ali berta nam voše nime.[7]
JOSEF: Maje nime ne vezi.[8]
ELENA: He doesn’t want to say his name.
JOSEF: Ne vjirujem da mi čilete pomači ni tsikand. Znomam vodole ste.[9]
LAMB: What’d he say?
ELENA: He doesn’t believe I want to help him.
HAMILTON: That’s all he said?
Elena and Lamb turn to Hamilton.
ELENA: Yes, why?
HAMILTON: Just seemed like there was more than that.
LAMB: How long has he been in Canada?
ELENA: Kaleto dago ste je vodje?[10]
JOSEF: Ka je voše sojnime?[11]
ELENA: He’s asking me if I’m a Sužni or Desni.[12]
LAMB: Those are the two ethnic groups?
Elena nods.
LAMB: Let me guess: he’s Sužni, and you’re …
ELENA: (looks at Josef) Desni.
JOSEF: (stands up) Kurvetino![13]
Josef spits at Elena’s feet. She takes a step back.
*LAMB: What the … ?
*HAMILTON: Whoa!
Lamb shoves Josef back to his seat.
LAMB: Christ. I won’t have any of that. D’you hear? I won’t have you threatening people.
(to Elena) I’m sorry about that. He hasn’t been violent at all.
ELENA: It’s fine.
