‘We have a shovel with Kevin’s fingerprints on it and one of Matthew’s eyelashes–how’s that for starters?’ Davies stopped to let the implication of that piece of information sink in. He turned his back on them and pushed a video into the wall-mounted TV. He sat down on the edge of the table, lit another cigarette and watched the CCTV footage of Kevin Milne holding Matthew’s hand and leading him away from the toilets where Angie Bell was having a sly fag. The TV went blank and then more CCTV footage came up. The inspector walked up to the screen and pointed out a woman talking to the pair. He took his cigarette out to speak; he wanted to make sure they heard every word. ‘Mrs Dexter is one of thirty-eight people who spoke to you, Kevin. Thirty-eight witnesses will say they saw you and Renee Smith leading the little boy away from different places that day. Some of them saw you hit him. Most of them say he was crying for his mummy. But Mrs Dexter will tell the court that she stopped you and you said you’d found him, that you promised her you were taking him to the police station.’ He took a draw on his cigarette again, and held it between his fingers as he pointed it at Kate Milne. ‘Mrs Dexter is going to have to live with her actions for the rest of her life. Her GP has her sedated. She feels responsible because she believed your son and now Matthew is dead. It’s no bloody wonder she can’t sleep. You managing to get forty winks, Mrs Milne? How about you, Kevin?’
Kate Milne remained silent but defiant. She continued to stroke Kevin’s head. ‘He’s a good boy, he’s—’
‘Shut up,’ said Davies. ‘He probably nicked that fucking rose as well. Have you any idea what your child is, Mrs Milne? Let me help you understand a little better.’ Davies turned his attention back to the child. ‘We have your fingerprints on the iron bar you used to batter the toddler with, Kevin. We have a witness who saw you torture him. We have a witness who can tell us every detail of how you planned this and orchestrated it. We even have a witness who saw you take Matthew’s heart.’ DI Davies stepped back. What would the little bastard say to that lot? A grim smile played across his thin lips.
