‘No,’ said Lois, a trifle too quickly, still staring at Joe. ‘We were just discussing what cases we have on in court. Take a seat outside in reception and then we’ll call you back in five minutes when we’re sure we are not breaching client confidentiality.’
‘Okay.’ Patsy Barnes smiled at Glasgow Joe and held his eyes as she said, ‘I’ll see you in five minutes.’
The office door closed. I turned to Joe and said, ‘She’s after you.’
He grinned. ‘Tell me something new, Brodie. When are you going to realize you’ve won first prize? Go on, admit it–you can’t believe your luck.’ He tried to grab me but I got away.
‘You like it, don’t you? All these women throwing themselves at you–the girls in Suzie Wong’s the other night and now her.’ I threw my head in the direction of the reception area.
A great belly laugh escaped from Joe’s lips. ‘If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were jealous.’
I was trying to find a way to burst his bubble when Lois poked me in the shoulder. ‘I don’t think there is any way we can get rid of her. She’ll realize there’s a big story if we try.’ She sighed and pursed her lips as though she was swallowing a bitter pill. ‘Sorry, but I think the only way is to invite her in, tell her everything is off the record until you give her the nod, and you get to review any written material before it’s published. What do you say?’ This girl was actually quite good, I thought, but before I could tell her, Patsy Barnes spoke from the doorway.
‘The five minutes is up and I agree to your terms. It’s going to be a pleasure doing business with you, Brodie.’
Chapter Fifty-Two
I had an hour before I had to leave for court. The work for the day was organized, so I decided to spend the last hour going over the case against Marshall. I couldn’t reveal his true identity to Patsy Barnes. The information was too explosive. Lois set the white board up in my office, I had a black dry marker pen and I wrote up the name GRAHAM MARSHALL in capital letters.
‘Is that the Dr Graham Marshall, the plastic surgeon?’ asked Patsy. I nodded and I wondered if he’d done any work for her; if so, he deserved his reputation.
