  26. AFTERWORD

Kat sped home but time was not on her side. She knew she had to get rid of Goldie. She had to distance herself or else she was going down with her. If the police knew she lied to them and was harboring a fugitive, she would be in some serious trouble. Goldie had to go. Kat felt no remorse, no shame in what she had done. She reasoned, if the shoe were on the other foot, Goldie’d do it to her. She just beat her to the punch.

When Kat entered the house, the flush look on her face told Tender something was very wrong. She looked like she had seen a ghost. Tender had been wondering how she was going to break bad news to Kat. But Kat dropped the bomb on her first.

“Where’s Goldie at?” Kat demanded to know as her eyes frantically searched around for her.

“She’s in da room. Why? Whut’s up?” Tender questioned.

“Whut’s up?” Kat repeated. “I’ll tell you what’s up! Da fuckin’ po-lease iz lookin’ fa her ass. They know she shot Jules. Dat bitch iz hot!!!”

“Whut?” Tender said, dumbfounded. “How you know?”

“Cause, they fuckin’ pulled me over and ran my ass in. I wuz sittin’ in da precinct fa hours … They wuz askin’ me lotsa questions ’bout her … They even know her real name.”

“Whut?” Tender mouthed unbelievably. “How they know all dat?”

“How I’m ’pose ta know?” Kat shot back. “It’s they damn job. They get paid ta know shit … They investigate … Now where’s Goldie? Her ass has gotta go, right now! She’s hotta than fish grease … Goldie!!!”

When Kat reached the back room, Goldie had just finished packing the last of her things. “Goldie! Don’t you hear me callin’ you?” Kat shouted. “Look, you gotta go. Da fuckin’ cops are lookin’ fa you. They know …”

“Know ’bout what?” she asked.

“They know ’bout Jules! … They know you shot ’im …” Kat had a wild look in her eye. “I don’t need dis shit! Girl, you gots ta get da fuck outta here. Befo’ they run up in here. I’m not goin’ ta jail fa nobody …”

Suddenly, Goldie burst into tears. Her time was running out. She, who never intentionally set out to hurt anyone. Yet, all she seemed to attract was trouble. And all she seemed to create was problems for herself. To her, it seemed as if she incurred the wrath of God.

“I’ma turn myself in,” she sobbed. “I’ma murderer. I belong in jail wit da rest of da savages ….”

“No, don’t do dat,” Tender pleaded. “Jus go on da run till we can scrape up enuff money ta pay for a good lawyer … Goldie, you ain’t got no record. You can beat dis. We ya witnesses, we saw everything. We’ll testify fa you …” It was self-defense.
