  26. AFTERWORD

“Ain’t no particular reason. Maybe I woke up on the right side of the bed. Or maybe dis li’l change of scenery beats all dat drama back in Philly,” she explained. “Life too short ta stay depressed all da time.”

“Aiight, dat’s what I wanna hear,” Tender agreed. “But ummm … what’s up wit dat stunt Kat pulled earlier? … Did she at least let you know what the deal was? I mean, I didn’t know shit till some fat muthafucka come knockin’ on my door …”

“Girl, we both in da same boat. I didn’t know a damn thang till some nigga knocked on my door … But you know how Kat iz, always on da grind, chasin’ dat paper …”

“While we wuz up here gettin’ down fa our crowns, what was she doin’? Huh?” Tender questioned. “… Think about it. And by da way, did ya get ya money from her? I ain’t get mine yet. And she ain’t said nuttin’ about it …”

All this talk about Kat, sex and money was beginning to ruin Goldie’s high. She just wanted to forget about all this mess. Any way she could she tried to escape the reality that had become her life. She just wanted to feel happy for a change.

“Naw, she ain’t gimme nuttin’. And ta tell you the truth, I ain’t lookin’ fa nuttin’ either.”

“What ya mean by that?” Tender questioned her. “Fuck dat shit.” She gonna gimme minez. I ain’t fuck all day fa free … What you sayin’, Goldie?”

The rattle of the doorknob brought this conversation to an abrupt halt. Kat was about to enter the room. Tender shot Goldie a look that said, “We’ll finish this later.”

“Glad you could join us,” Goldie playfully remarked, as she opened the door. “Yo, Kat, I was just tellin’ Tender ’em country boys sure do know how ta ball. Dat stretch Navi wuz no joke.”

Down here in Miami everybody’s a balla till they get back to they li’l hick towns. You can rent anything and everything down here. So niggas be stuntin’.”

“But I don’t think them niggas wuz fakin’ any moves. They looked like they was gettin’ it,” Tender confessed, adding her two cents.

“Sometimes looks can be deceivin’,” Kat said. “Ain’t you ever heard dat old sayin’? Anyway, fuck ’em. They history. Gimme three new and a betta crew … Damn, you bitches sure iz takin’ long gettin’ dressed. Ya’ll two iz like two old ladies. Always rappin’.”

Tender smiled and said, “Yeah, let me go take my shower. Fuckin’ wit Goldie, I got thrown off my square.”

“Imagine dat,” Goldie shot back. “Look where you at, in my room. You came over here ta talk ta me. Don’t get it twisted.”

“I don’t care who said what when,” Kat interrupted. “Can both y’all do me a favor and put a pep in ya step?”
