They left the rental car in the garage at the hotel and walked. They got no more than a block away from their hotel before they were stopped by a couple of guys.
“Excuse me, miss,” referring to Kat. “Would you mind posing for a picture with me?”
“Aiight, c’mon,” Kat said. “But I betta not see dis shit on da Internet!”
“Naw, naw! baby girl. It ain’t like dat,” he quickly responded in a midwest accent. “Dis here fa me and da boys on lockdown.”
As they snuggled close together, making themselves appear more like lovers than strangers, his friend snapped the picture with a disposable camera.
“Chuck, take another one just in case that don’t come out,” he instructed his friend. They had been up and down Washington Avenue and Ocean Drive snapping pictures of beautiful girls. Back home they would score major cool points with his boys.
When that was done, he made one more request. “Would y’all all take a picture wit me? Fa old times’ sake?” he playfully asked, talking to Tender and Goldie like he had known them for a long time.
They willingly obliged him. He hugged Kat and Tender by their necks, since they were taller. Goldie stood in front of him since she was the shortest. His friend snapped two pictures and it was a wrap. The two parties went their separate ways.
The photo op request developed into a pattern that they quickly grew tired of. “Enough of this camcorders and camera shit,” Kat finally said. So together they headed to the nearest rental shop and rented three motorized Honda scooters. Up and down the strip they rode. In and out of traffic they weaved, enjoying themselves. None of them had had this much fun in a long time. Tender and Goldie had never. They never had a chance to just play, even as children.
Night fell over Miami, leaving a beautiful fireball orange streak in the sky. When the sun went down, the freaks came out in droves. Black females and males combed South Beach looking for the best clubs and parties. During the day and well into the night, people passed out flyers promoting this or that party being thrown by some celebrity entertainer. Half the time, the other invited celebrity guests never showed up. It was just a gimmick to pack the club. You had to know somebody to get into some of the most exclusive parties or clubs. And even then, things didn’t really get jumping till eleven p.m. and lasted well into the next morning.
Kat, Goldie and Tender found themselves on the outside looking in. Most clubs had long lines or VIP lists that you had to be on. Some were known to even reject celebrities.
