Raymond scampers away, trying to get to his feet. Bert kicks Raymond. Raymond curls up in a ball. Philomena sees her make-up box tipped over and runs urgently towards it.
Bert . . . Nobody – you don’t fuck with my dope, OK? Nobody fucks with my medicine.
Raymond My head!
Bert sees Philomena trying too quickly and furtively to tidy up the contents of the spilled box. He approaches her.
Bert What the fuck are you –
Philomena Get back, it’s my box, it’s my –
Bert But these ain’t your cufflinks!
Raymond gets up and bends down over the box, which is broken. It has a false bottom and there are several stolen items splayed out on the floor, including his cufflinks.
Raymond Why, you thieving . . .
Philomena crosses herself and recites some Hail Marys. Bert reaches over and picks up a wallet that has fallen from the box. Inside it is a wad of cash. Philomena springs to her feet. Bert holds the money in the air as she tries to grab it from his outstretched hand.
Bert . . . the fuck is this, as if we didn’t know already?
Philomena That’s my money! Give it here!
Bert You took his goddam money!
Philomena If you must know, I was given – I was given that money by several men in the crew for looking after them.
Bert Yeah, sure. What the fuck is it doing in his wallet then? You took his fucken money!
Philomena NO! I never did!
She throws a tantrum, falling down on the bed, punching the pillows with her fists, sobbing.
Bert Stop that shit, it don’t impress us.
She turns round and sits up, swinging her legs off the bed.
Philomena I borrowed the wallet from him! He gave it to me to keep my money safe, he didn’t want me losing it. We were close, me and Charlie, and I . . . I was looking after it for him.
Bert Like you looked after Ray’s cufflinks? You’ve been rumbled, you leprechaun cunt!
Raymond We have a criminal justice system here in the United States of America, Miss Kinsella; a criminal justice system designed to protect citizens of the United States of America, like myself and Mr Kowalski, against foreign tricksters like yourself. These cufflinks have been in my family for three generations –
Philomena (sobbing) I was only keeping them safe for you, I would have given them back . . .
Bert You think you had it bad with them nuns back in Ireland; see how your little Irish ass likes it in prison with some of the dirtiest, nastiest broads this side of the pond, honey . . . right, Ray?
Raymond The authorities will take a dim view of your behaviour, I can assure you, Miss Kinsella, a dim view. You will either be incarcerated here, as Mr Kowalski has suggested, or immediately deported home for punishment. This is a very serious matter.
Philomena jumps on the spot in tearful frustration.
