Chapters (14)
When I’d last seen Amelia, in the gloom of early morning, her wan face was luminous, like the moon behind thick fog. She told me that she was afraid that this stranger was becoming one with her dreams, so that, in time, he would no longer appear in them, not because he was gone, certainly, and not because he would be there, watching her dream, but invisible to her, but because he would have, by then, become her dream altogether. Then he would be dreaming her. She told me, too, that she had only come to fear death all the more, because she now believed that, in death, you are forever exposed to a gaze, to the steady and unblinking gaze of an unknown watcher in a dream that cannot end.
