  29. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING

‘Oh please,’ Elise said. ‘You go to the police having arranged an illegal abortion for an underage girl – especially when you could have gone to them before – you yourself will end up arrested. And you will hand Kelleher a great trump card to play against you in the court of public opinion: instead of saving the baby this reckless pro-abortion liberal harpy insisted on forcing this underage girl to have a backstreet abortion. Even if Amber insists it was her call, her choice … even if Kelleher is arrested and exposed as the hypocritical brute he is … the media will jump all over you as the worst sort of feminazi baby killer. You know damn well this is exactly how they work. This child Amber is carrying is now ten or so weeks from birth. He deserves life. We have to honor that, Klara. I explained this to Amber tonight. I asked her directly if she could live with herself if the child was aborted at this very late juncture. I explained that her best revenge against the man who brutalized and raped her was to bring his son into the world and, as she doesn’t want to keep it, give him up to parents who would ensure that he has all the opportunities in life. My group can find solutions when it comes to getting her to a safe, comfortable home in which to see out the rest of her pregnancy, to find proper excellent medical care for her to have the baby delivered, to arrange its discreet adoption, and to then tell her story to the LAPD and the world.’

I came in here, telling Elise:

‘I still think what you said earlier makes the most sense. We should go to the cops now.’

‘But Amber’s right,’ Klara said. ‘If we go to the police Kelleher and his people will step in … and who the fuck knows what will happen next. Especially when Kelleher has the Church and the city establishment behind him. For all your nice reasoned talk, Elise, about moral gray zones and civic acceptability, the fact is: we’re in a war here. Against the endangered white male who will do everything possible to make certain he is still running the show. And those assholes never play by the rules. They fuck over women’s rights. Fuck over minorities. Fuck over emigrants. Fuck over anyone LGBT. They are essentially turning us into a banana republic with a superrich elite who now control all our lives.’
