  18. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I clapped and laughed. “Sierra! It’s my poem! And I thought of myself as the earth too! So funny!”

She nodded and grinned. “The Wildflowers loved it, so we set it to music and recorded it for you. It was Tessa’s idea. They want you to come back so we can work some more on the lyrics, okay? And the song doesn’t have a title yet either.”

“Maybe we should add something about ice cream to the song,” I said with a laugh. “Or something about sprinkles.”

“Maybe you should call it ‘A Sprinkle of Friendship,’ ” joked Tamiko.

She put her arms around me and Sierra and began dancing, doing a cancan. Sierra and I joined in, and soon my whole writing class was laughing and applauding.

“Hooray for me and my besties!” I said.

“Hooray for friends,” said Sierra, giving me an extra squeeze.

I squeezed Tamiko and Sierra back. “Hooray for friends,” I echoed. “And plenty of them!”

“Tamiko, you’re going to be late for your first day of school!” Mom yelled up the stairs.

“COMING!” I yelled back. Mom was being unreasonable. I still had ten minutes to get to the bus stop, and I needed to upload my blog post before I left.

I’d just taken a mirror selfie of me in my back-to-school outfit: baggy ripped jeans and a white T-shirt with cartoony bright-orange carrots on it. I started typing.

And here’s the winning outfit! Thanks for voting in my poll yesterday. I brought home so many cool outfits from Tokyo that I couldn’t pick one.

Now I’m off to start another year of school. The good news is that I finally have a class with my bestie, Sierra! Image Image

I started to type: The other good news is that I don’t have to take art this year with Mr. Rivera. I love art, but that class bored me to tears! But I deleted it after just a few words. Before the summer started, I’d gotten into some big trouble for posting something negative on my blog that I’d just meant to be funny. So I was trying to be really careful.

Instead, I typed: If you’re going back to school today too, remember to be your fabulous self, walk tall, and don’t let the haters get you down! That’s Tamiko’s Take.
