Ruby stepped past her and looked around, very pleased with what she saw. It was a warm, cosy room with a comfortable-looking bed piled high with feather pillows and covered in a pretty patchwork quilt and a small rosewood wardrobe with a matching chest of drawers standing next to it. The windows were draped in dark-green damask curtains and a fire burnt cheerily in the small fireplace. Standing against another wall was a marble-topped washstand with a pretty china jug and bowl and in front of the window was a small table and chair where she could sit and look out at the London streets.

‘It’s lovely,’ she told Caroline who was already striding over to the wardrobe.

She flung the door open and smiled with satisfaction. ‘Ah, good. Hattie has already put your clothes away for you, and this gown is quite beautiful.’

She was stroking the green satin gown that she had been given for Christmas. ‘It was a gift from Miss Wood, but I confess I have never been anywhere grand enough to wear it yet.’

‘Then we must go to a show in that case! Anyway, I suppose I should go and get ready for dinner too else I’ll have Mama scolding me.’ And with that she tripped from the room leaving Ruby with a happy smile on her face. Something told her she was very much going to enjoy this trip!

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Dinner that evening was a light-hearted affair. Ruby had changed into a smart gown in a lovely burgundy colour trimmed with a darker braid that Hermione had insisted she should have, and she felt very grand.

Caroline and George kept up a constant stream of chatter throughout the meal, which was plain but very tasty, and by the time it was over Ruby almost felt that she had always known them.

‘Papa, I was saying to Ruby that we really must take her to a show while she’s here,’ Caroline said as Hattie placed their desserts, a delicious apple charlotte, in front of them. ‘She’s never been to London before. Or perhaps we could go to the opera or a play.’

George chuckled indulgently. ‘What you mean is, you would like to go,’ he teased.

Caroline slapped his hand and scowled. ‘That isn’t it at all,’ she told him and he winked at Ruby causing a ripple of laughter around the table.

‘I’m sure it could be arranged, my love,’ her father answered indulgently.
