His father nodded. ‘Happen you’re right. Sometimes you just have to know when to call it a day, but things will get better, you’ll see. We’ve got a thriving business that needs your attention an’ when I’m gone, it’ll be all yours and Hermione’s.’
Oscar scowled. ‘Don’t talk like that. You’ve got years left in you yet.’

His father chuckled. ‘Just take them blinkers off and you’ll soon find out. But now if you don’t mind, I reckon I’ll have a little kip. Miss Wood will be bringin’ me lunch up soon. But just think on what I said, eh?’ With that he turned over and pulled the blankets up to his chin as Oscar quietly left the room.

Later that day, after having a short rest, Oscar went to see Ruby and he was pleased to see how much better she looked.
‘Miss Wood informs me that you are finally on the mend now, my dear.’
She smiled at him nervously. ‘Yes, I am, sir, and I’m sorry about what happened with—’
