Filip came to collect them to take them to their house and they all squashed into his trap; Lizzie too, as she had also been invited. Ellen was disturbed when he said it was too far for Harry to walk between the two houses at present, as she thought that if that were the case it would also be too far for Anna to walk to the proposed bakery. We’ve to think of the children; how can we possibly do this? She had previously thought they could take it in turns to have the children on different days; prove the dough in an evening and bake the following morning. It’s not going to work, she thought miserably, and I really want it to.
The rooms in the house the Boscos were renting were in Margaret Street, off the Beverley road; it was a pleasant street, with only a few houses as yet but plans for future development, according to Filip. ‘But it doesn’t matter,’ he said jovially. ‘When I make my fortune we will move to a whole house and not just have a few rooms.’
He’s very ambitious, Ellen thought, but there’s nothing wrong with that; he’s willing to work hard for what he wants, as we all are.
He and Harry, who was sitting at the front with him, were discussing the plans for Tannerson’s, and Ellen could tell that Lizzie was listening to what they were saying, although she didn’t comment.
‘Lizzie,’ Ellen said, trying to speak so quietly that only Lizzie could hear her over the chatter of the children and the rumble of the wheels on the rough road. ‘I keep meaning to ask; Harry said that Tannerson and Son’s company name is to be changed to Tannerson and Partner.’
Lizzie nodded. ‘So it is.’
‘So has the partner’s name been announced yet?’
Lizzie paused and then looked steadily at Ellen. ‘Not yet it hasn’t,’ she responded. ‘It will be. But not yet. It’s too soon.’
Ellen held her gaze for a further few seconds before looking away. It had been a significant pause that Lizzie had chosen not to break, and Ellen allowed herself a little smile: her sister was shrewd and wise and imaginative; what better partner could Mr Tannerson need?
