He seemed choked up with emotion, but went on, ‘If you’re willing, sir, I’d like to begin wi’ three teams of men working in different areas and put a capable and responsible team leader at ’head of each of them. I’ll mek a plan and discuss it with Mr Randell once we’re closer to being up and running.’

Tannerson thanked him for his support, and told them that at the next meeting they would make the formal arrangements to form a working committee. ‘I’d like to assure you all that there will be no financial input required from any of you, but the prospect of future bonuses for those of you working full time will be considered at a later date. Thank you, gentlemen – and lady.’ He turned to Lizzie, who smiled. ‘I appreciate your time today.’

Filip offered Harry a lift to Queen’s Road as he was heading that way. He had bought a second-hand trap and an old mare which he was stabling near his house. ‘You must come to us for supper now that we are in our new home, and bring children too. I will tell Anna that is what we will do.’

Harry smiled and thanked him. Filip obviously hadn’t yet been told that their wives had already arranged an early evening supper at the new house. They were to share in the making of food and Anna had said she would ask Filip to collect them. That’s how it works, he mused. Men think that they’re in charge, but then we find that what we propose has already been agreed.

Look at Lizzie, he thought. A matter of weeks working for Tannerson and she’s coming up with new ideas. He was quite convinced that it was she who had suggested a team of suitable men who could help Tannerson build up his company once more, rather than struggle on his own; and as for his own position, it would be perfect for him, especially until he got his full health and strength back.

But there was something else. Ellen was up to something. She had been trying out different types of flour when she made their bread, white, dark, wheat, rye and oat, and asking him and the children what they thought of the taste and texture. Some they liked; others, like the dark flour containing bran which she said was cheaper, they didn’t. Then she had said that there was something she wanted to discuss with him, Anna and Filip when they went to look at the Boscos’ new house.
