‘I’ve been consulting with engineer Bosco, who has been conferring with others on the suitability of various new hydraulic presses, with the possibility of purchasing these machines from Rose Down and company who will build them according to our specification; you will know, Kirkwood, that they are a long-standing and well-thought-of company.’
Kirkwood nodded in response and Tannerson went on. ‘If all goes to plan as I hope it will, there will be many changes within the company; too much was left to chance previously, and familiarity bred contempt.’
Harry breathed in and out; he had known it for months.
‘Which possibly led to fatalities in the workplace,’ Tannerson went on. ‘However, I do not choose to parcel out blame. As owner of this company the responsibility rests with me entirely.’
Kirkwood shifted on the bench as if he were about to say something, but then changed his mind.
‘Filip Bosco is an independent engineer, but if he is in agreement I will discuss a contract with him and he will fit and subsequently arrange a regular servicing of the new machinery, by him or some other company that he would recommend.’
Harry now heard Filip draw in a breath; this obviously was what he had been hoping for. It would be a good foundation on which to build.
‘Jack Kirkwood has been with this company since the days of the original Tannerson and his daughter, my late wife, who like Mr Rose’s daughter ran their company efficiently and profitably. I’d like to offer you, Kirkwood, the position of foreman; you know the work and the processes, and I’d give you the opportunity of choosing the men who you think would enhance the company without fear or favour.’
Harry glanced at Kirkwood. He barely knew him, but he seemed to grow in stature at Tannerson’s words.
‘Mrs Robson has proved to be a most efficient secretary with a keen head for procedure, and she has agreed to continue in the post.’
Harry saw the flush on Lizzie’s cheeks and wondered if she was being offered more than Tannerson was saying here.
‘I had also invited the carpenter Karl Kidman to the meeting, but he declined my proposal as he is about to launch his own company. However, he will be pleased to offer his services if they should be required, as I’m sure they will be.
