Anna and the children called to see them one afternoon to tell them that they too were moving again and coming to a small terraced house off Beverley Road. It wasn’t far away from Queen’s Road so they would see each other more often. ‘It is Jewish welfare board who do this for us; they help us find house. Filip goes to synagogue in Posterngate near where we got off ship, and he is assisted to find more work also. And, ‘she said excitedly, ‘we have letter from Filip’s cowsuns.’ Ellen and Harry both smiled; her accent was so endearing. ‘They are coming on train from Leeds. Edyta’s brother, Ezra, he make inquiries through his people and found them. Abraham and his brother Daniel are – erm, shnayders? In English is – tailors,’ she remembered triumphantly. ‘Filip is very happy.’
‘We’re so pleased, Anna,’ Harry said, and Ellen agreed. ‘It will be comforting to have family nearby, but I hope you don’t leave us and go to live in Leeds.’
‘No!’ Anna said. ‘It is good here and we have your friendship; Filip he is happy to have work and soon they will be starting to build mill.’
‘Will they?’ Harry asked anxiously, hoping that he would be fit in time, but also wondering if he would ever be capable of hard physical work; he was still in some pain, although his burn scars were healing.
‘Mr Tannerson say that he will have news for us all soon. So this is why we move now, and I shall have house with oven like yours to make my bread, Ellen. But it will be too far for me to work for Mrs Brownlee. I cannot leave children.’
Ellen nodded vaguely. Something was bubbling in her mind, but it wasn’t formulated yet; she must leave the idea on the back burner until Harry was back at work again.
Anna called to the children, who were playing outside in the garden; the gate was securely locked, but both women knew that Jakub was almost big enough to be able to climb over the fence, which was what he was trying to do now, and what he did, Aron and Thomas would follow.
‘They need to go to school soon, I think,’ Anna said. ‘That is the next step.’
