‘Do you give treatments here? Acupuncture and so on?’
‘No. I am not qualified but I have a colleague I refer people to if they wish. Why, is this something you need? He is the best, very highly trained.’
‘No, but I have heard good reports of it so I’m glad to know where to come. Do you have many customers?’
‘This varies every day of course. It is quiet now, busy in the mornings, and the bad weather doesn’t encourage people to go out. They come if they need anything. I have many regular customers. They recommend.’
‘So business is good?’
‘It is certainly not bad. I would always welcome more of course because I like to provide a service to people who have had no help elsewhere, to see that I can make them improve . . . not always of course, I know my limits. I would never hesitate to refer to a doctor. But I am quite happy with business. Why do you ask?’
‘Do you come into contact with illegal drugs, Mr Wang?’
The man’s expression changed, tightened, he became cautious in a second.
‘What drugs do you mean? Everything I use is licensed, perfectly legal.’
‘Heroin? Cocaine? Hallucinogenic drugs?’
‘No, no. Of course I would never give these or stock them. These are very dangerous, these ruin lives. No Chinese pharmacist would have anything to do with any of them. The young man who died upstairs – please, I have nothing to do with this, I did not know him, but it was shocking that he found this place and overdosed himself here. It is not my flat, I do not own it, it has –’
‘I know. Don’t worry, that was all checked out. You rent this shop only.’
‘Yes, yes. Mr . . .’
‘Serrailler. '
‘So why have you come here again?’
‘I need to ask you one or two more things.’
‘What has happened? I thought it was all decided, case done. I was told so.’
‘There is new evidence that suggests Liam Payne didn’t self-administer the overdose, it might have been injected by another person, and probably it was not done in the flat but somewhere else – we don’t yet know where – after which the body was brought here, either already dead or dying – again, we aren’t yet sure. So it must be obvious that there were at least two people in the flat . . . and dragging a body across bare boards, or dumping it down onto them, would have caused a certain amount of noise, the sound of footsteps, bumping about, movements up and down the stairs.’
‘This is not something I ever heard. And it would not be my business – when people rent a place, they do what they wish. But I did not hear anything, at any time.’
‘Cars parked?’
