He must have left it open because he thought she’d still be out. She’d headed up the hall to visit Heather and Violet and told Tony she’d be a little while. After Heather’s break-through and admission that she did need help yesterday morning, Andrea wanted to make sure she kept the momentum going in case Heather suddenly turned on her again. She’d taken a packet of Tim Tams to share with them and pasted a bright, friendly smile on her face when she’d knocked on the door.
Heather hadn’t been rude, but she hadn’t exactly been thrilled to see Andrea either.
‘I thought we could share these?’ Andrea had said, waving the Tim Tams hopefully.
Heather had moved back to let Andrea inside. They’d stood awkwardly, Heather’s arms folded tightly across her body as they made stilted small-talk, Violet watching the two of them with cautious optimism.
But when Andrea tried to move towards the couches, Heather had snatched the biscuits from her and said, ‘Sorry, but can we do this another time? I’m just a little tired.’
So Andrea had returned home. Disappointed that it hadn’t been a meaningful chat, but hopeful enough seeing as Heather had mentioned there being another time. She supposed this was going to be a more long-term process than she’d imagined.
When she’d spotted the open computer and heard the sound of the shower running . . . it had been too much to resist. Tony hadn’t even let her in on the general plot idea for this book and all she wanted was a quick peek to see what it was like.
She slipped into his chair and checked the page number so she could make sure she returned to the right place after she’d had a look. Then she scrolled back to the beginning of the document and read the title.
Don’t Breathe Twice, by Tony Lewis.
Okay, interesting. So, it was going to be a direct sequel. Catchy title, she supposed, if a little kitsch.
She started to skim read, wanting to take in as much as she could before Tony got out of the shower. But after a moment or two, she found she had to stop, go back and re-read it.
