Huck’s eyebrow lifted. “Interesting. How many men have worn tennis shoes within three yards of you in the last two weeks?”
“Twenty-seven. Which is an odd number, considering it’s winter and only boots make sense.” One guy had even been wearing shorts and no socks. People really were crazy.
Huck grinned. “This is a fun game.”
“I enjoy it.” She cleared her throat. “There’s one question that has been bothering me about this case from the beginning, and it’s nagging at me, even with the wonderful pain meds in my blood.”
Huck ate another fry. “What question?”
“The one you asked when we were walking in the snow. What’s the likelihood of two serial killers working in our small Genesis Valley within months of each other?” She took a sip of her water, her chest heavy. “Statistically, I can’t compute a number.”
Huck nodded. “It seems like Abigail just wants to be your focus. Is she so malignantly narcissistic that she’d push an obviously sick individual into killing, just to gain your attention?”
Laurel looked down at her hands. “I don’t know. But the puzzle pieces click together when you consider that possibility.”
His eyes sharpened. “I agree. Plus, there’s one more thing. I was going to wait until you were out of the hospital to tell you this, but you’re already there, of course. It won’t lead to any result without proof but does verify what your head and my gut say.”
“What’s that?” She stopped with a fry half way to her mouth.
“When I talked to Jason Abbott earlier, he did tell me one interesting thing when he stopped sniffling and feeling sorry for himself.”
Laurel straightened. “What?”
“He had started to follow Abigail from a distance, but she scared him, so he didn’t go near her until this last attack. Also, he swears, and I believe him, that he never left black dahlias on her front lawn. She must’ve done that herself.”
Laurel dropped the fry. “But that means . . .”
“Yeah. It does. She knew everything from the very beginning.”

Then the case takes a shockingly personal turn when the father she’s never met, a former pastor, is attacked in exactly the same way.
