Felix felt a warm glow enter his body under her delicate touch. He glanced down at her, wondering if she was aware of the effect she had on him, but by the look of innocence etched upon her face, she hadn’t got a clue.

‘It’s important that those of us who came across on the Kindertransport look after one another,’ he said, tucking a lock of Roz’s hair behind her ear, ‘but I’d like to think that you and I have a special bond, because we spent the whole journey together.’

‘And Adele,’ said Roz. A reminiscent smile played on her lips. ‘Whatever happened to her?’

‘She went to a farming family to be company for their elderly mother. We made doubly sure it was all alright after we realised the Haggartys had lied.’

‘You’ve heard from her?’ said Roz. ‘How is she? Is she far from here?’

‘She’s fine, doing well in fact. I’d give her your address, but it wouldn’t be a good idea for her to write to you at the Haggartys’.’

‘You’re right there, the less they know about me the better,’ Roz agreed.

‘Do you fancy a cuppa?’ said Felix. ‘We could nip into town and catch up, maybe have a treat in Blacklers.’

‘Don’t see why not,’ said Roz. ‘Is it far?’

He raised his eyebrows. ‘You’ve never been?’

Roz looked intrigued. ‘No, should I have?’

He gave her a sympathetic smile. ‘Everyone should visit Blacklers at least once in their life, or so Alan and Bill say, but I guess you haven’t because of who you’ve been living with. I daresay the only time they’ll ever have gone in, is to see if they can steal something.’ Taking her arm in his, he began to lead the way into town.

‘I don’t think they’d bother going into a cake shop just to steal—’ Roz began before Felix put her straight.

‘Blacklers is a huge department store; the restaurant is only a small part of it. They sell fancy jewellery, things for your home, dresses, anything and everything you can think of.’

‘Ah,’ said Roz, nodding wisely, ‘that makes more sense. The Haggartys have got a real reputation around Liverpool; I can’t see the staff letting the likes of them in.’

‘True.’

He walked her over to an impressive-looking building and led her inside.
