Felix rested his chin against his knuckles. ‘I’ll look after the necklace for you, then you needn’t worry about it going missing again. As for Suzie, knowing or even suspecting what we’ve done is one thing, but proving it? That’s another matter entirely. Especially when she can’t produce the necklace, and as you’ve never been seen with it, it would be her word against yours. Whilst I daresay they’d believe her, she’d have to explain why she kept the necklace for herself rather than hand it over to her father.’ Pausing, he looked at Roz who appeared doubtful. ‘They’ll know she must have had it at least overnight, because you can’t plan something like we did at the drop of a hat, so she won’t be able to squirm her way out of that one.’

Roz tried to get it straight in her mind before running it past Felix. ‘So, she’ll know that I know that she knows, but she won’t be able to do anything about it?’

A smile twitched the corners of Felix’s lips. ‘That’s about the size of it.’

‘Do you think she’ll try and confront me when no one’s looking?’

Felix raised an eyebrow. ‘And say what exactly? That you stole back the necklace that she stole from you in the first place?’ He shook his head in a chiding manner. ‘From what you’ve told me, not even Suzie would be that stupid.’ He placed his hands into his pockets. ‘No, she’ll have to bite her tongue for a few days, and you’ll be grateful that looks can’t kill, but other than that, she can’t do a damned thing.’

A slow, satisfied smile formed on Roz’s lips. ‘Serves her right, and perhaps it’ll teach her that she’s not as smart as she thinks she is.’

‘It’ll certainly let her know that you’ve got friends,’ agreed Felix.

‘The best friends a girl could have,’ said Roz, still smiling at Felix. ‘I do appreciate what you and Mabel have done for me. I’m very lucky to have people like you in my life.’

Beginning to blush under such praise, Felix dropped his gaze. He liked Roz an awful lot, and if he were to have his way, they would be far more than friends. He glanced back up. ‘I wish I could get you out of there today. I hate the thought of you having to live with people like them in a place like that.’

Leaning forward, she gently caressed his arm. ‘Knowing I have friends like you watching my back makes it all worthwhile.’
