“But you’re not attracted to Micah,” she says. “And not Evan.”
“No,” I say. “Not either of them. I love Micah, but he’s only a friend. And I think Evan is nice, sort of, but I’m not really interested in him beyond talking about school and stuff. We really don’t have anything else in common.”
“Who have you had a crush on?”
“I —” I pause for a minute, realizing I don’t think I’ve ever had a crush on someone. How is that even possible? “This is going to sound crazy, but I’ve never had one,” I say.
“Whoa, seriously? I’ve had a million!”
“Like who?” I ask, trying to shift the focus away from me.
“Oh, Cole Jenkins, Evan, Tony, Sam . . .”
“Who’s Sam?” I ask. “Is he from a different school?”
“No, silly. Our Sam.” She points to the water, where Sam is about to fall off Jack’s shoulders.
I don’t know if I’m more surprised that she had a crush on a girl or that she had a crush on Sam, but I try to be nonchalant about it.
“Our Sam? But she’s —” I pause. “A chicken!”
Cybil cracks up. I laugh, too, which wakes Ivy.
She sits up and rubs her eyes, and that’s when I realize we forgot to put sunblock on her. How could we do that after what happened to me? But she doesn’t seem too burned. “What time is it?” she asks. “Why’d you let me fall asleep?”
“Don’t worry — you haven’t been asleep that long.”
She wipes the dried drool off the side of her mouth.
“I’m hungry,” she says.
“You shouldn’t be — you ate all of our food.”
She pouts.
“You’re the one who wanted to come. You could’ve stayed home and waited for Mom and Dad to get back with groceries.”
“I’m going back in the water,” she says, all gloomy-faced.
“Good. You can keep Micah company.”
“Micah’s here?” she asks. She jumps to her feet. “Micah!” she yells, waving crazily. She runs into the water and high-fives Micah when she reaches him.
“Your sister is so funny,” Cybil says.
“Yeah,” I say. “Except when she’s not.”
Cybil laughs.
“Anyway, we were talking about Sam,” I tell her, feeling a little uncomfortable and a little brave at the same time.
“Oh, well, that was a long time ago. I just liked how outgoing she was and stuff. Now I have a new crush developing.”
“Really? Who is it?”
“I’m not ready to say yet. It’s still too new.”
“Oh.”
