Finn’s vision is kind of blurry. “I’m not used to being hit by guys,” she says. She presses the ice pack to her nose and flinches.
“That wasn’t a guy,” Alyssa says. “That was Tanya.”
“Tanya?” Finn tries to think back: the spin on the stool, a fist coming towards her, the flicker of a moment in between. It was a nondescript fist, neither overly masculine nor feminine. “It was Dallas,” she says. “Dallas hit me.”
Alyssa laughs again. “Dallas would never hit anyone. He’s too much of a pussy. It was Tanya.”
Finn closes her eyes again and sees the hazy features of an extremely pissed-off woman. “Native chick, short black hair, straight bangs, glasses?”
“Yup. She’s Dallas’s girlfriend.” Alyssa smiles. “I guess she’s heard about you.”
Finn sits up slowly and then immediately feels dizzy so she puts her head between her knees. Of course Dallas has a girlfriend. Dallas cannot live without a girlfriend. And while she’s remembering this, she’s also remembering that he has a giant mole above his left nipple, that he always says “film” instead of “movie,” that he fucked her twin sister. She is remembering that all the trouble in her life has always originated with Dallas Vaughn.
WARNING: DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES LET DALLAS VAUGHN BACK INTO YOUR LIFE. PERIOD.
“Do you want some water or something?” Alyssa asks.
Finn stands up, wobbling. “Maybe another shot,” she says. Alyssa shrugs, unimpressed. She thinks Finn has lost the northern part of herself. Maybe she’s right.
They walk back into the bar and Finn slides back onto her stool, rests her head in her hands as she gingerly dabs the ice pack against her face.
“Hey!” she hears someone shout. Tanya is standing by the door, her jacket hanging from one arm. “Stand up, bitch.”
“Eric!” Alyssa calls across the bar, where the father of her child is trying to fish a quarter out from behind the jukebox with the handle of a broom. “I thought I told you to get rid of her.”
“Shut up, Alyssa!” Tanya yells. “I’ll hit you, skank, I don’t even care that you’re pregnant.”
“Bring it!” Alyssa yells back, coming out from behind the bar with her game face on. Finn stands up, looking around for some kind of weapon she can defend herself with. But Tanya’s not coming for Finn now, she’s coming for Alyssa, and Alyssa stands her ground, hands out like she’s going to rip those glasses off of Tanya’s face and shove them down her throat.
