“We forgot to get milk,” Shawn says as they pull out of the driveway. He already has his tablet open on his lap, scrolling through emails. All of his earlier joviality is gone. Katriina wonders if it was even real, or just a show for his family.
“Okay,” she says. “Can I have the Safeway card?”
“You have it,” says Shawn. “I gave it to you when you were buying the steaks.”
“I gave it back to you.”
“No, you didn’t.”
“Yes, I did.” She might not have. She doesn’t know why she’s pushing, though sometimes she wonders if these mundane details are the only things they have left to talk about. At the next red light, she gives Shawn a pointed look, and he pulls out his wallet, flinging it across the dash.
“Go ahead, check,” he says. “It’s not there.”
“Forget it,” says Katriina, manoeuvring the SUV out onto the highway. “You’re right. You’re always right.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing.”
“Clearly it means something.”
“It means nothing, Shawn, okay?”
“Right,” he says. He turns back to his tablet. “Nothing.”
Katriina squeezes her hands on the steering wheel. “Fine, you want to know what it means? It means since when did you start liking HP Sauce on your steak? And since when did you start lifting weights?”
“What?” She can feel him looking at her, but she keeps her eyes focused on the car in front of her. “What the hell are you talking about?”
“Lifting weights, Shawn. Why didn’t you tell me you started lifting weights?”
“I don’t know, I didn’t tell anybody.”
“You told Finn.”
Shawn exhales loudly. “Oh,” he says. “Of course. This is about Finn.”
“This is not about Finn!” She turns towards him. “This is about you!”
“Watch out!” Shawn yells, bracing himself against the dashboard. She turns back to the road to see the car in front of her is no longer moving. She slams on the brakes, stopping just inches before hitting it. As she sits there, trying to catch her breath, she sees a deer and a fawn bound across the road. Her eyes fill with tears, but she quickly blinks them away.
“What’s in Ottawa?” she asks.
Shawn doesn’t say anything. The car in front of them starts up again, and Katriina eases her foot onto the accelerator. She wonders if he is going to answer her, or if he is just going to pretend he doesn’t know what she’s talking about. “A job offer,” he says finally. “At Alex’s company. But it wasn’t serious. If it was serious, I would have told you.”
“Right,” says Katriina. “But since it wasn’t serious, you told Finn.”
“It just came up while we were talking about something else!”
“Something else you didn’t tell me?”
“Jesus, Katriina!” Shawn leans his head back against the seat and shuts his eyes.
