“Well, the Rum Runner’s right over there, at Bayside Marina,” Pseudo-Vegan says. “Just on the other side of the lift bridge.” When Finn raises her eyebrow, Pseudo-Vegan shakes her head in disbelief. “Uh, his boat?”

Nicki has already made it to the breakwater by the time Finn catches up with her. “Nicki,” she says, out of breath and sweating, the bottoms of her feet scorched and buzzing. “Adam’s filming his documentary at the marina on the other side of the bridge.” They both stare at the lift bridge, which is on its way up. Just beyond, they can see a line of slips dotted with boats.

“They’re over there?” Nicki asks. “How did you find out?” The wind has picked up, and her hair, usually shellacked into place, has come loose, strawberry-blond tendrils dancing in the wind around her head. Finn knows that later, Nicki’s hair will be so tangled that she won’t be able to get a brush through the end without using some leave-in conditioner and serious upper body strength. Finn knows this because her hair is exactly the same.

“Those two girls who hate each other are apparently Adam Pelley groupies.”

“Right,” Nicki says. “We’ll just base our entire search on the word of random skanks.”

“They weren’t skanks, they were just regular girls. And they knew where Adam is, which is also where we’ll probably find London and Mom, too.”

“Probably?” Nicki shakes her head. “So you don’t actually know where they are. You just want to be right about something, as usual.”

“I don’t care about being right!” Finn yells. “I just want to find Mom and London!”

“Why?” asks Nicki. “Why do you suddenly care now? I just don’t understand, Finn. I just don’t get it. This bullshit has been going on for years, and you’ve never wanted anything to do with your crazy mother and your criminal niece before.”

“Who, London?” Finn laughs. “London’s not a criminal.”

“Oh my god, Finn! Did you know that she was arrested for drug possession? Fucking arrested. Dragged out of her school in handcuffs, in front of all her classmates. The only way she could get out of it was ratting out her suppliers, and all her friends ditched her because of it. Did you know your niece is basically a teenaged pariah?”

“Of course I knew,” says Finn. She can remember some snippets of conversations with Shawn while she was half-distracted by dinner on the stove or Max in the yard, emails from her mother that were poorly punctuated and full of statements of questionable accuracy. She must have known.

“So you knew, but you didn’t do anything about it? I feel so much better knowing that.”

“Come on, Nicki, that’s not fair.”

“Fair? You want to talk about fair?” Nicki’s voice grows louder, shriller.
