They all freeze, smiling. And although Shawn has his shirt buttoned up wrong, and Nicki has her fingers in bunny ears over Finn’s head, and Kate is distracted by something off to the left, Kate kept that picture in a frame on their living room wall for years. “It’s the best I’m going to get out of the lot of you,” she’d joke, but Walter knew there was a sobering truth to it. Sometimes it seemed as though that one moment as a family was all they were ever going to have.

“All right,” Walter says, bringing himself back to the present. “On three. One, two, three!”

The family grins wider. Walter clicks the button and lowers the camera. As he does, he sees a man standing on the bridge, staring at him. He seems familiar, but Walter can’t place him. “One more for safety,” he says. When he lowers the camera again, the man is gone.

“Thanks so much.” Steve takes the camera back from Walter. “Hey, maybe you can tell us. This is that place where the lady went over the falls in a barrel, right? Do you know which side she was on?”

Walter clenches his fists. “No, sorry.”

“I want to go over the falls in a barrel,” Jayden whines.

“I wish you would,” says Kylie.

“You don’t want to do that, honey,” Karen says, ushering her children towards the boardwalk. “That lady was crazy. Only a terribly disturbed person would do something like that.”

And that just about does it for Walter. He excuses himself and makes his way up the stairs, a great crushing feeling in his chest that causes his breath to come in sharp bursts. His heart is pounding and he is sweating profusely, but he keeps climbing, dodging the crowds, up to the nearly empty bridge near the top of the falls. It’s not until he is about halfway across that his panic begins to subside. He leans his arms against the railing and lowers his head.
