Oh great. Why is he only attracted to women who are afraid of drowning? “That wouldn’t happen,” he says. Gently, he peels her fingers back from the wheel and places her hands at her sides. She slips her arms into the sleeves of the jacket, which is a thousand times too big for her, her hands disappearing into the cuffs. She moves closer to him, looking at the wheel with a mixture of desire and fear. He’s got her now, the way a dealer has an addict. It’s not why he brought her out here, but right now he’ll take it. He steps aside and she reaches out. The Rum Runner responds with a shudder and a sigh, which is better than he’ll ever get from either of them.
Later, on the upper deck, Adam gazes out over the water. What if there really are sharks out there? he thinks. What if there’s a whole species of freshwater sharks that they just haven’t discovered yet? If they were going to be anywhere, they’d be in Superior, this ten-thousand-year-old basin full of three quadrillion gallons of meltwater, likely swimming around Isle Royale, the Graveyard of the Great Lakes, feasting on the bodies of sailors who never made it to the surface. Superior is infamous for never giving up her dead. According to Wikipedia, that is.
He could find it. If it was out there, he could. What would Jessica think then, after all those things she said about integrity and trust, about Adam not being the man she thought he was? Maybe she would leave the family farm in southern Indiana and come back to the water with him. Her parents always thought she would drown, that was what they were worried about: not whether Adam would make her happy, but that by being around water all the time, she was increasing her odds of drowning. Her parents had never even seen the ocean. To them, it was just a big, salty death hole waiting to claim their first-born daughter. Which ended up being how they saw Adam, too.

There was a moment, back in the hotel room, when things with Yasmine changed. He had been avoiding her questions, trying to get her to fuck him again, when suddenly she said, “You made the whole thing up about the lake shark to get a show on Shark Week, didn’t you?”
