“I’m sure she didn’t.” Katriina moves her free leg back and forth, trying to replicate the earlier pain. But it’s gone. If it was ever really there in the first place. She decides to just keep going, push her luck, with the leg and with Shawn. “And what about last night?”
A pause. “I went out for drinks with some of the kitchen guys.”
Katriina considers playing along with him. But what would be the point? “I know. Hanna called me this morning. She told me you crashed at her place.”
Shawn shakes his head. “I got too drunk. It was stupid.”
“You should have called.”
“Yeah.”
“I was worried. I thought you were mad at me about the miscarriage.”
Shawn stands up and wipes his damp hands on his jeans. He focuses on the floor, avoiding her eyes. “I’m going to look for some rubbing alcohol or something.”
“No,” says Katriina sharply, struggling to sit up. The adrenaline pumping through her body at the sound of the word coming out of her mouth, the feeling of it being expelled on air from her own lungs. “No,” she says again. “You need to stay. Every time the conversation stops going your way, you leave the room. Every. Damn. Time.”
Shawn stops in the doorway, but keeps his back to her. Katriina can see his shoulders rising and falling under the thin material of his T-shirt as he tries to get his breathing under control. “I’m trying to help you, Katriina.”
“No, you’re not. You just can’t stand it when I confront you about anything. Everything always has to be on your terms.” She can’t believe she didn’t see it before. It’s like a light switch has turned on in her brain, illuminating all the dark corners where her bad thoughts about Shawn used to hide.
“My terms?” says Shawn, turning around. “You think these are my terms?” He sweeps his hand out in front of him, gesturing to the entire room, but Katriina knows he means her. His imperfect wife, who for one tiny second, when everything piled up too heavily on her shoulders, had the gall to break.
“Well, they’re not my terms either.” She crosses her arms defiantly, staring him down. “I didn’t make this happen, you know. I didn’t lose the baby on purpose.”
Shawn doesn’t say anything. Oh my god, Katriina thinks. He thinks I lost the baby on purpose.
“No,” he says after a minute. “You just lied to me about it, and left me to look like an idiot in front of my entire family.”
Katriina exhales. “I didn’t lie about it. I was just waiting for the right time to tell you. I didn’t think you were going to announce it like that, in front of everyone.”
“Whatever.” He walks away abruptly towards the kitchen.
