This time Katriina does laugh, waving her arms back and forth in the space over her head, trailing her fingers through the air. “She’s in the Thunder Bay General Hospital. Room 8157. In a coma.” It comes back to Katriina, the drop, bang, flip. What must it have felt like, those moments suspended in midair? The weightlessness. The deceptive feeling of freedom. The irresistible pull of gravity. Kate is likely the only person who will ever know. What would that be like, to be the only person in the world to ever experience a particular thing? Katriina is quite sure she will never find out.
“No. She isn’t, Katriina.”
With the phone still balanced on her chest, Katriina shimmies herself up against the arm of the couch, rests her head back, and looks up at the ceiling. Things have suddenly gone from sparkly to dark and cloudy as she tries to get her bearings in the conversation. “You say my name a lot,” she says, stalling.
“I’m trying to get your attention, Katriina.”
“Did you know that when I was a kid everyone at school called me Kat? They did. Right up until I started middle school.” She watches the black cloud tracking across the ceiling, hovering just above her head. “I had this best friend in kindergarten, Sam something, and she thought that Katriina was too long. She wanted us to match, be Kat and Sam. You know, like best friends should.”
“You’ve told me this before,” Shawn says.
“Do you think that’s why Finn started going by Finn?” she asks, the thought just occurring to her. “Because Nicki did it first, and she wanted them to match?”
“Actually, Finn did it first. When she was four. She couldn’t make an R facing the right way to spell Serafina, so she just started calling herself Finn.”
The black cloud descends, settling around Katriina’s head. “Well, aren’t you just a regular Finn encyclopedia.” She laughs to herself. “A Finncyclopedia!”
Shawn sighs. “She’s my sister. I know a lot of things about her. Just like you know lots of things about Hanna.”
“You know what’s really sad?” Katriina says, ignoring him. “I can’t remember anything about Sam except this one story. I wonder what happened to her. I wonder if she grew up to be Samantha.”
Katriina can hear Shawn sucking on his teeth the way he does when he doesn’t know what to say. There is a long pause while she listens to it. Suck, suck, suck. “Where are you?” he asks finally. “Are you at the house? I think I should come get you.”
