One We close our eyes
Three And stagger home,
One While the groaning timbers in the windows seem to brag and moan –
Three They say, ‘well, you look older
Two But you haven’t grown.’
One We see our faces slide across the pane,
Three We look away,
One Nothing for it,
Two Bosh your brain to glory,
Three Same old story
One And it shows no sign of
Three Ending.
One Coz there’s a whole night ahead of us,
Two Ours for the befriending,
Three And no matter what our brains beg of us,
One Our hearts are ripe for the tempting.
Three See,
One When you’re sick of being trodden down
Three You reach for your ascension in the nonsense that you swallow down.
Two We just wanna find some
One Substance
Two In this hollow town.
One It doesn’t matter that tomorrow’s round the corner if your sorrows drowned tonight,
Two At least that’s something,
One And how can we be blamed when every day’s the same?
Two We just want to lose our names and our edges.
One We just want to lose our minds
Three And lose the lines that draw the borders.
Two The shadows haunt the corners,
Three No one’s gonna laugh at you if no one knows you’re tortured.
Two We want to change,
One But change aborted becomes strange
Three And we are taunted by the same old repetitions,
Two We grin,
One But our smiles are contorted,Three And we forget our epiphanyOne The minute that we thought it.
Scene Three
A party in a warehouse in Peckham. All three characters are completely munted. 17 But not in a caricature kind of way. In a way that suggests they’ve been getting munted for many years, and know how to take drugs without having to make a big deal out of it. Dark lit stage, maybe strobe lights, or UV strip lights to make them look a bit monstrous, make their teeth look dirty, eyes look a bit alien etc. Dirty bass music playing. Loud. Nothing cheesy. Really dirty and bass heavy. 18 There should be a feeling of loads of other people in the room. Maybe the cardboard cut-outs from earlier. Danny and Ted are sitting together with their backs against the speakers, on the floor,
grinning, with their arms round each other’s necks looking a bit like they’re ten years old. There should be a massive difference in their physicality compared to earlier when they were sat on the bench together. They should be open and tactile. They giggle for a bit, then start wrestling each other. The three of them are dancing, in their own worlds, and then together. Ted throws his arms around both of their necks, they’re all together, in a little love huddle, raving, and munted, looking up to the lights, swallowing, grinning, touching each other.
Blackout, sound stops. Lights come up and it’s daylight, sickly kind of daylight that you never really want to see. It’s well into Saturday morning, Ted, Danny and Charlotte are sitting on an old sofa outside. The door to the party is to the back of the stage, the sofa is in a little yard that leads out to the street. Maybe some grass, or just concrete. They’re wasted, eyes rolling, jaws tight, sipping water, swallowing, skin dirty, looking monstrous, feeling glamorous. They should all have their little MDMA tics,19 either crooked fingers pointing their words out, or something in their faces. Post pill gremlins. Charlotte is physically with them (they’re all touching each other somehow, at all times) but her mind seems elsewhere.
